A New Song …

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit , singing to God with gratitude in your hearts” (Colossians 3:16). At the heart of the Christian life, there is worship – “psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit”.  In the Psalms, we read bout “a new song” – “Sing to Hm a new song” (Psalm 33:3); “He put a new song in my mouth” (Psalm 40:3); “Sing to the Lord a new song” (Psalms 96:1; 98:1; 149:1); “I will sing a new song to you, my God” (Psalm 144:9). This is more than about when the psalms, hymns and spiritual songs were written. Some are very old. Others are very new. Can the old songs, also, be “a new song”? A new song is a song that is shaped by the new life that the Lord has given to us. Before we knew Him, we sang the song of the world. We had no other song to sing. Now, knowing Him, we sing a new song. It’s “a hymn of praise to our God” (Psalm 40:3). It’s a song that rejoices in what the Lord has done for us – “He has done marvelous things.” It’s a song of “salvation” (Psalm 98:1). This has nothing to do with when a song was written – a long time ago or not very long ago. It has everything to do with singing with a heart and life that has been made new by the Lord.
