When the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared …

But when the kindness and love of God our Saviour appeared, 5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:4-7). Salvation begins with “the kindness and love of God our Saviour.” The Gospel tells us that “He saved us.” It doesn’t tell us that we must save ourselves. Salvation has been given to us. It has not been obtained or achieved by us – “not because of righteous things we had done.” Salvation comes to us from above, from God – “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour.” In His salvation, God has given to us His forgiveness for our past sins – “justified by His grace” – and the glorious “hope of eternal life.” “To God be the glory! Great things He has done!”
