“And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. 4 I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.”” (Genesis 46:2-4).
For Jacob’s family, there would be hard times ahead – “the Egyptians ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves” (Exodus 1:13), but, before that, there would be times of blessing in Egypt. What about the hard times? Did they mean that God was breaking his promise? No! After the hard times, there was God’s mighty deliverance – God “brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand” (Exodus 6:6; 32:11). When we’re going through hard times, we need to learn to look for the big picture. Look back, and remember what the Lord has done. Move forward, with faith, believing that the God, who has blessed us in the past, will continue to bless us in the future.
