Memory, Experience, Expectation …

Memory brings back the past to us. We remember the things that have already happened. Some of our memories are good memories. Some of our memories are bad memories.

Expectation is our way of looking forward to what may happen in the future. We have hopes – and we have. We hope that our future will be a good future. We fear that our future may be a bad future.

Between the past and the future, there is the present. We experience the present. It’s the only time that’s now time. The past has gone. The future is not yet. We’re always in the present. The past is always behind us. We can’t go back there. The future is always ahead of us. It’s out of our reach.

In our minds, we look back to the past – but we cannot be in the past. It’s no longer there for us. In our minds, we look forward to the future – but we cannot be in the future. We’re not there yet.

What are we to do with our bad memories? What are we to do about our fears for the future? What does God say to us about our past and our future?

About our past, God says, “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (Jeremiah 31:34).

About our future, God says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).
