“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Ephesians 1:3-4).
We sing praise to the Lord. He has blessed us so much – “every spiritual blessing in Christ.” When we think of ourselves, we are not to think of ourselves as superior – ‘I’m different from other people. I’m a believer.’ That’s not faith in Christ. That’s faith in ourselves. That’s faith in our own faith. When we think of our faith, what are we to say? Where has our faith come from? It’s come from the Lord. It’s come from his love for us.
What are we to say about his love? It’s eternal love. His love for us is so much greater than our love for him. It’s love that calls out to us in our sin. It’s his love that calls us into his salvation. It’s his love that gives us the strength that we need to walk with him on his “highway of holiness” (Isaiah 35:8). When we stumble and fall – as we so often do – it’s his love that lifts us up and sets us on our feet again.
How does his love lift us up? In his great love for us, the Lord assures us of something very wonderful – “the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). These great words of our Saviour’s love are not only for the beginning of our life of faith. They’re for the whole journey – the blood of Jesus keeps on cleansing us from all sin.
Here’s a link to a great hymn, “There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel’s veins, and sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains.”
