“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).
When I was a young boy, being taught the meaning of words, our schoolteacher asked us the question, “What is the opposite of … ?”, e.g. What’s the opposite of clean and right? – Dirty and wrong.
Make me clean and right. This was David’s prayer. Why did he pray this prayer? It was because he was dirty and wrong. Like him, we are dirty and wrong. His story is our story. It’s the story of sin. David took his sin to the Lord. We are to take our sin to the Lord. What do we find when we take our sin to the Lord? – “The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanses us from sin” (1 John 1:7).
