“Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Sometimes, we think of prayer as ask, ask, ask … nothing but asking. Here, we have prayer, set in the context of rejoicing and giving thanks to him. It is good for us to be reminded of the importance of rejoicing in the Lord and giving thanks to him. When we place so much emphasis on asking, prayer can, easily, become self-centred, thinking far too much about what we can get out of it. When asking seems to be taking over our prayers, let’s not forget to rejoice in the Lord and give thanks to him.
