“Esau hated Jacob because of what he had done to him (or because of the blessing with which his father, Isaac, blessed him, Jacob)” (Genesis 27:41).
The story of Jacob and Esau can be read at a purely human level. Esau’s reaction to Jacob’s trickery was perfectly understandable. What are we to make of all this? Human tradition told Isaac that the elder son was to receive the blessing. Divine revelation told him that “the older son was to be the servant of the younger son” (Genesis 25:23). What a mess this turned out to be! Was this because Isaac was being guided by human tradition rather than divine revelation? There’s only one sure foundation for our faith and life. It’s not human tradition. It’s the Word of God. We are not to build our faith on “the tradition of men” (Colossians 2:8). We are to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly” (Colossians 3:16).
