Kept by the power of God

“Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life” (Jude, verse 21).

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy, to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen” (Jude, verses 24 and 25). .

“Keep yourselves in God’s love.”

We read these words, and we wonder,

“How can I do this?

We ask ourselves,

“Can I keep myself in the love of God?”

Is there not so much sin in me,

That I keep on disqualifying myself from being loved by God?

Then, we read the words,

“To him who is able to keep you from falling,

And to present you before his glorious presence,

Without fault and with great joy”,

And this changes everything.

I don’t keep myself in the love of God.

I’m “kept by the power of God” (1 Peter 1:5).

We “wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,

To bring us to eternal life.”

We don’t come to the Lord, saying,

“I’m doing my very best.

I hope that’s good enough.”

We trust in “the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,

To bring us to eternal life.”

Keeping ourselves in the love of God,

This can never be our own achievement.

It can only be something about which we must always say,

“To the only God our Saviour, be glory, majesty, power and authority,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore. Amen.”
