The apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers… and Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord

“Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:11-16).

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: We give thanks to God for all of them. Above all – we give thanks to God for Jesus Christ. He is our Saviour.

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: They all have their place. None of them can take the place of Jesus Christ. He is our Lord.

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: We learn from them – but we must not make not too much of them. Each of them has one high calling. They are to point away from themselves to Jesus Christ – their Lord and Saviour.

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: They play their part in leading us on to maturity. They do this when they call us to turn our eyes on Jesus and keep our eyes fixed on him.

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: When we are tempted to settle for remaining spiritual infants – they remind us that we are called to grow in Christ.

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: They have been given to us by Christ. They are the gift of his love. They proclaim to us a greater gift: “the Son of God loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). They proclaim to us the greatest love of all: “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

The apostles – the prophets – the evangelists – the pastors and teachers: They are called to praise the Lord and be his faithful servants. Let us join with them – in praising the Lord and serving him.
