When we fall away from the Lord

“Meaningless! Meaningless!
    says the Teacher. Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 12:8).

“Now all has been heard;
    here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
    for this is the duty of all mankind” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

How do we get from “meaningless” to “fear God”?

Do we say to ourselves, “Pull yourself together. This is getting out of hand. It’s time to start thinking positive thoughts”? or Do we start listening to what God has to say to us?

“Meaningless”: this is a problem for us.

Is it a problem we can solve by ourselves? or Is it all too much for us?

Is it only God who can bring us from “meaningless” to “fear God”?

When we ask these questions, we know, in our hearts, where the answer must come from?

It must come to us from beyond ourselves. It must come to us from above. It must come to us from the Lord.

“God has set eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

From the eternal God: this is where our faith comes from.

He speaks to our hearts. He turns our thoughts towards Jesus, our Saviour. He shines his light into our dark place. He lifts us up when feel like we can’t go down any further.

Will we ever get so low again? Who knows?

Will he be there for us when we fall away from him? Yes! He will be there for us.
