In our hard times

“There is a time for everything … ” (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

In life, we have happy times – and we have hard times. In our happy times, we feel like we are being blessed by the Lord. We say, “Thank you, Lord, for our happy times.” What happens to us when the hard times come? Do we feel like we’ve been abandoned by God? Our feelings can lead us away from our faith. In our hard times, we need to be reminded that God is still with us. He hasn’t gone away and left us. In our happy times, God is calling us to rejoice in him. In our hard times, he’s teaching us to trust him. Don’t say “God is only with me in my happy times.” Sometimes, we need to be taken into God’s school of suffering – into the place where he teaches us that his love never changes, the place where he leads us into a closer walk with him: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
