“The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour” (Judges 6:12).
These words were spoken to Gideon. For us, as well as Gideon, they are words of encouragement, and they are words of enabling. We are encouraged by the words, “The Lord is with you.” How can we be described as “mighty men of valour”? It’s only by the enabling grace of God. In ourselves, we are not strong. The more we think of ourselves, the more deeply we become aware of our own weakness. The Lord comes to us in our weakness, but he does not leave us in our weakness. He says to us, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power” (Ephesians 6:10). How are we to to be strong in the Lord? We are to “put on the whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:11).
