Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”(Genesis 3:1).
Did God really say? Here, we have the sowing of the seeds of doubt, the questioning of God’s Word. Do we believe that God has spoken? Do we believe that he’s still speaking? Faith receives and believes God’s Word. What about doubt? Sometimes, we have honest questions. We’re looking for understanding of what God’s Word is saying to us. Sometimes, we’re unsure what the answers to our questions are. Is this what we have here: questions that are looking for answers? No. It’s not. What we have here is a question that is leading us in the direction of unbelief. This is not a question that is looking for an answer. It’s a question that’s leading us in the direction of rejecting God’s Word. When we are tempted to reject the Word of the Lord, may God help us to “take up the shield of faith, with which we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16).
