Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15).
Study: what does it mean to study the word of God? What about hearing and reading the Word of God? When we hear the Word of God, we must accept the fact that much of what we hear goes in one ear and out the other ear. When we read the Word of God, we take in a bit more, especially if we read the Bible day by day. Reading the Bible in our own homes will take us beyond simply hearing the Word of God preached. We are to move beyond reading the Bible. We are to study the Word of God.
How does studying the Word of God connect with memorizing the Word of God and meditating on the Word of God? “Memorizing” sounds a bit artificial. I would suggest that much of what we might call “memorizing” arises out of our hearing, our reading and our studying the Word of God. We get to know what the Bible is saying to us. Some verses stand out for us. There seem to jump out at us. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. As we hear, read and study the Word of God, praying to the Lord that he will give us understanding of his Word, we will meditate on what we hear, read and study. We will ask, “What is teaching me? How will this help me to live the life of faith?”
How will all of this take shape in our lives? Something that I have done, over the years, is taking notes on what I’ve been reading, putting into my own words what I’m learning from the Word of God. One thing I should say is that I’ve spent many years, writing notes for preaching God’s Word and teaching others what God’s Word teaches. Out of this preaching ministry came a ministry of preparing printed notes for others to read and learn from. It was out of the ministry of writing daily Bible reading notes that my blogging ministry emerged. Those who have followed my blogging closely will know that the three-year series of notes, covering the whole of God’s Word, forms the heart of what you’ll find in my blogs. You may never have a preaching ministry, but you can have a writing ministry. Those of you who blog are sharing something of yourselves with others. You’re sharing with others what you’re learning from the Word of God, as you make your journey through life.
What am I to say about my own blogging ministry? It has developed over the years. Here are some of the links which will show you how it has developed.
I hope that you will find something here that will help you in your study of the Word of God.
God bless you.
