Responding to God’s Word (10): Take my life and let it be, consecrated, Lord, to Thee.

May your hearts be fully committed to the Lord our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time (1 Kings 8:61).

Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken… I also have heard you, declares the Lord (2 Kings 22:19).

There are times, in our lives, when we feel that we are particularly close to God. Our hearts have been deeply moved, and we feel a deep desire to commit ourselves to him. These are precious times, but life is not always like this. There are times when we need to be reminded of these times of blessing. There are times when we need to be reminded of the commitment of ourselves that we have made to the Lord in the past. We need to recommit ourselves to the Lord.

How are we to respond to the Lord, and how are we to rediscover his way of blessing? We are to listen to the Word of the Lord with our hearts as well as with our minds. When there is a stirring in our hearts, this is the result of the working of the Holy Spirit. He speaks to us through the Word of the Lord. He opens our hearts to receive the love of God. He leads us to listen to what God is saying to us. He gives us the strength of faith and love that we need to recommit ourselves to the Lord.

There will be other times when we have fallen away from the Lord, times when we need to come to the Lord with a humble heart, confessing our sin and receiving his blessing. Sometimes, this will happen when we’re gathered together with God’s people. Sometimes, we will be alone with God. May God help each one of us to give ourselves, more truly and more fully, to him.
