God’s saving grace and keeping grace

“I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.  For in him you have been enriched in every way, with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge, God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:4-9).

God’s “grace” is saving grace. It is, also, keeping grace. Grace is “given” to us at the beginning of our life of faith. God’s grace accompanies us, all along the way in our lifelong journey of faith: “He will also keep you firm to the end.” As we think back over our journey of faith, we remember many times when we have let our Lord down. Many times, we have stumbled. Many times, we have fallen down. Many times, the Lord has lifted us up and set us on our feet again. Again and again, we have looked at what’s happened in our lives, and we have said, “God is faithful.” Let us praise the Lord and give thanks to him.
