Let us pray that we will hear more than the words of the preacher. Let us pray that we will hear the Word of the Lord.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know (Jeremiah 33:3).

There have been many times when I have wondered, “What should I say to the people who have come to hear me, preaching God’s Word?” When I have asked this question, I have asked another qiestion, “What have they come to hear?” Have they come to hear my words? or Have they come to hear the Word of the Lord? They will hear my words, but will they, also, hear the Word of the Lord? As I ask these question, I ask a further question: Where do the “great and unsearchable things” come from? We know the answer to this question. They are given to us by the Lord. We say to the Lord, “I need to be taught by you, Lord, if I am to teach others.” The people come with great expectations. They want to hear more than the words of the preacher. They want to hear the Word of the Lord. They need to hear more than the words of the preacher. They need to hear the Word of the Lord. The preacher prays, and the hearers pray. What is it that the preacher and the people pray for? They’re asking God to do what he has promised to do: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
