“Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairing of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in” (Isaiah 58:12).
Rebuilding, raising up, repairing, restoring – all of this is very important. In the work of the Lord, we continue work that has been done for a very long time. Our faith is no new thing. We build on ancient foundations.
Go back to the time of Jesus. It was a very long time ago. Some people tell us that we should leave Jesus in the past and get on with living in today’s world. We’re told that today’s world is the real world. We understand where people are coming from when they say this kind of thing – but have they really convinced us that Jesus should be left in the past? Is there not something about Jesus that refuses to be left in the ancient past? Many generations have come and gone since the time of Jesus. We think about the many changes that have taken place in years. We think about how different the world was in Jesus’ time. We wonder if a man, from such a long time ago, can, possibly, have something relevant to say to today’s world. Then, we remember something about Jesus, something we don’t hear much about these days – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8)! Are we living in the past – when we put our faith in Jesus Christ? or Is Jesus living in the present – again and again, showing us, in our ever-changing world, that he is, still, the Saviour that each of us needs.
Rebuilding, raising up, repairing, restoring – what’s this all about? Are we just preoccupied with the past? or Is Jesus the perfect Saviour for today’s world? Each of us must answer this question for ourselves. Think about Jesus. Read about him in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Perhaps, you’ll be surprised by him. You may find yourself thinking, “Jesus has more to offer to today’s world than all the people who’ve been telling that I should just forget all about Jesus!”
