Living as a new creation

How are we live as a “new creation” (Galatians 6:15)? Paul speaks to us about “faith expressing itself through love” (Galatians 5:6). What does it mean to have faith? How are we to live a life that is inspired, controlled, motivated and directed by love? Paul speaks about the beginning of the life of faith: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we read about the new creation, we praise the Lord and we say, in our hearts, “This is what the Lord has done for me. It is his doing , not my own doing. To him be all the glory.” When we think a bit more deeply about ourselves, we know, in our hearts, that we are very far from being the finished article. We still have a long way to go. This is where Paul’s words in Galatians 5 and Galatians 6 really speak to us. They make us feel so unworthy, falling so far short of what we should be. They also inspire us. The Lord is with us. The Lord is on our side. He lives in us. By the power of his love, he has changed us. By the power of his love, he will continue to change us. When we think about the new creation, we need to be honest with ourselves and we need to keep on believing that God hasn’t given up on us, and he won’t give up on us. There is still too much of the old life in us, but there is, also, Christ living in us. When the call to live as a new creation seems to be too much for us, let us remember this: “Greater is he that is you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
