From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:66-69).
Do you ever feel like turning back from following Jesus? The pull of the world is very strong, and you feel very weak. This is the story of our life. We are being pulled in two very different directions. The Lord is drawing us to himself, The world is calling us back to the life that we had when we lived our life without Jesus. From Peter’s words, “You have the words of eternal life”, we learn that we receive, from Jesus, something which the world can never give to us. “Eternal life” is “the gift of God.” He gives us this gift through “Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). When we’re tempted to turn back from following Jesus, may God help us to remember that Jesus has the words of eternal life, and may he give us the strength that we need to keep on following Jesus, all the days of our life.
