Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls (1 Peter 1:8-9).
Filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy: we’re not always like this. Filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy: this is what God calls us to be. How are we to be filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy? Here, Peter directs our attention beyond our life on earth, with all of its many worries. He directs our attention to “the end result of our faith, the salvation of our souls.” It is important that we do not get so bogged down in our present situation that we fail to lift up our eyes and catch a glimpse of our future salvation. However much our present situation may threaten to fill all of our thoughts, may God help us not to lose sight of his eternal salvation. This is where our inexpressible and glorious joy comes from.
