Despite our many sins, the mercy and grace of Christ reaches us.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account (Hebrews 4:12-13).

These are very searching words. They could leave us feeling that there is no hope for us.

When we read these words, it is important that we, also, read the next few verses.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16).

These are very comforting words. They assure us that there is hope for us.

Thank God, we have these words of God’s “mercy” and “grace” as well as the searching words of verses 12-13. They are words that give ue some encouragement, when the words concerning God’s holiness leave us wondering, “What are we to do? What can we do?” In the face of God’s holiness, the only thing we can do is confess our sins. When we confess our sins, Jesus hears us, and he answers our prayer for forgiveness
