God’s Word still speaks to us (74): Looking beyond the preachers of God’s Word, looking to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being. I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus. Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas (Peter) and stayed with him fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostles — only James, the Lord’s brother. I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.

Then I went to Syria and Cilicia. I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they praised God because of me (Galatians 1:11-24).

“The gospel I preached is not of human origin… I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ” (verses 11-12) “They praised God because of me” (verse 24). Paul goes into some detail about what he did between his personal conversion and the beginning of his public ministry. We are going to focus on vereses 11-12 and verse 24 – “revelation from Jesus Christ” and “praising God because of Paul.”

We read what Paul has written, and we ask, “What does this teach us about true ministry of the Word of God?”

True ministry of God’s Word comes from this: “revelation from Jesus Christ.” Wherever God’s Word is being preached with power and authority, our hearts rejoice, and we say, “This is coming to us from the Lord”, and we praise God for the Word that has been preached to us.

This is not about saying, “This is great preaching. This is a great preacher.” It’s abou hearing the Word of the Lord. It’s about looking beyond the preacher to Jesus Christ. It’s about seeing more than the preacher. It’s abour catching a glimpse of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

We are not think too highly of the preachers. They will not always live up to our expectations.

We cannot think too highly of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is always exalted above all the preachers. We must never forget this.

When we look up from the many concerns of our our life, may we see “no one except Jesus” (Matthew 17:8), and may we always look beyond the preachers, and say, “Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness” (Psalm 115:1).
