Our love for God is weak. His love for us is strong.

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy – to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen (Jude 24-25).

When we look back from these two verses, we find, in verse 21, the words, “Keep yourselves in God’s love.” These words can unsettle us. We start thinking about what these words mean, and we start questioning ourselves, “How can we keep ourselves in the love of God.” The more we think about this question, the more we find ourselves asking, “How can we possibly do this?”, and the more negative our thinking becomes, “We can’t do this. This is too much for us.” Then, we look on to verse 24, where we read about God’s power to “keep us from stumbling and to present us before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy”, and things begin to change. A more positive outlook arises in our hearts. Where does this more positive outlook come from? It comes from God. It comes from his power to keep us bin his love. When our hold on God is weak, we are reminded that his hold on us is strong. When our love for God is weak, his love for us is strong. When we feel that our hold on God is getting weaker, may we remember this – “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).
