Faith, not fear

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7-9).

Our life is a journey. On this journey, we do not know what lies ahead of us. If we are to travel in faith, not fear, we must feed on the Word of God, learning from the Word of God and living by the Word of God. We come to the Word of God with our fears, and the Word of God encourages us to have faith. We are not to have faith in ourselves. We are to have faith in the Lord. Whatever difficulties may come our way, we need not be afraid of them. Why are we not to be afraid of those testing and trying circumstances? Is it because we have the strength, in ourselves, to cope with our hard times? No. It’s not. There is another reason, a better reason, why we need not be afraid – “the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
